How to start computer billing in a kirana store

Brozap guide · Updated 30 October 2026 · 6 minute read

Moving from a paper bill book to a billing app feels like a big change, but most of the work is done once. Follow these seven steps and you can bill from the app within a day.

1. Decide what you want the app to do

Write down your top three needs. For most kirana stores they are: faster bills at rush hour, knowing stock, and correct GST bills (if you are registered). Pick software that does these simply; you can add more later.

2. Choose the device

3. Get a printer (optional)

A 58 mm Bluetooth printer is enough to start; busy shops prefer 80 mm. You can also skip the printer and send bills on WhatsApp. See how to print a bill from mobile.

4. Make your product list — start with the top 100

Don’t try to enter all 2,000 items on day one. List the 100 items you sell most (atta, rice, dal, oil, sugar, tea, soap, biscuits…). For each, note:

Add the rest of the items as they come up at the counter, over the first week.

5. Set your GST details

Enter your shop name, address, state and GSTIN, and choose regular, composition or not registered. The app then prints the right kind of bill. Our GST bill format guide explains what the bill must show.

6. Count opening stock

For the items you added, count what is on the shelf and enter it as stock. From then on, every bill reduces stock automatically. Do a quick re-count of fast-moving items after a week to catch mistakes.

7. Practise, then go live
